Last night I smiled from ear to ear rummaging through my costume chest for the perfect outfit. Ah ha! The green shiny pantsuit with the football sized shoulder pads was chosen. Even thinking about the idea of being silly got me flowing with joy. Secret confession: I love a theme such as 80's Dance Cover Band that demands costuming. I know what gives me joy and out of self care I will create that for myself and you can too!
There's plenty in my life that I allowed to steal my joy in 2018 yet I have the choice to "clap my hands and regain a new mood" (thank you Rachel Hollis). It wouldn't be fair for me to simply brush over negative emotions that are associated with the pains of my past but I can chose to change my mood at any instant. Stop, breath and joy.
The word I chose for this year is JOYFUL! What's yours going to be? Once you discover your word, join me in figuring out 3 things to do, bible verses or phrases you can turn your mind to, if something comes up to snag the theme from you.
Join us this week as we rest and pray for our year. Starting next week we meet at a new location: 2900 Valmont Ave #F1, Boulder. Monday 8am, Wednesday noon and Thursday 7pm. Inside the new location for Jade Martial Arts.
So, if you see me wearing a costume some day for no apparent reason, know I'm allowing God to cultivate my joy, and there's no need to call the authorities.
Psalm 118:24 - This is the day the LORD has made, let us be glad and rejoice in it.
On Saturday I had the honor to assist in the amazing Sole to Soul Yoga Workshop. If you didn't get a chance to attend, please allow your soul, your soles, and yourself the opportunity to, next time. We laughed and we cried: it was a roller coaster of emotion, worship, stretching and learning. This was definitely my kind of "retreat." Rather than sitting in a chair, simply listening to a speaker all day, we could invite the Holy Spirit into our entire beings with movement on our mats. It was great!
One of my students admitted that although she enjoyed yoga as a physical practice, she worried if it was "right" for a Christian. I've heard this many times since I began my yoga journey. Once I had a woman sign up for my class on Meet Up to later let me know her pastor forbade it and that she wouldn't be attending. And in a general sense, I don't get a feeling the local churches are too keen on the idea either.
Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19)? What does it mean when we are called to meditate on His word? Being healthy and fit is how we maintain the temple and doing a contemplative practice such as Christian stretching is how we merge fitness with meditation. Even the word yoga translates to yoke.
Let your intention be for Christ in all you do! To quarrel over disputable matters such as circumcised vs uncircumcised, meat vs vegetables, Christian yoga vs skiing, is the type of self judgement that divides the church. All sports have been provided by our creator and he wants us to be happy and healthy so we can serve and love others.
So, if you've been holding back on trying Christian yoga because you don't want to jeopardize your position in heaven, don't fret as we focus solely on Christ at Frogpose.
Do you live in a gated community? In 25 years of selling residential real estate, I've only sold a few homes that offered this. I was thumbing through the for sale pages of some Puerto Villarta Mexico local newspapers and thought to myself "Mexico seems a kind of drug-cartel scary and if I lived down there, I'd definitely want to be in a gated community." Heck, the Pope lives in a gated community...
This layer of perceived protection offers us peace in safety.
As does God, our fortress. He equips us with the armor we need to fight the day's battles. As a mom, it might be to "eat your veggies". As a worker bee, it might be the battle in the workplace. We can take strength in our battles knowing God's got his breastplate of righteousness and shield of faith protecting us: our battlecry is LOVE and our weapon is forgiveness!
Come to frogpose where we ask God to deepen our understanding of his protection for us with the use of breath, physical postures and focussing on His word. We meet our usual Monday at 8am, Wednesday noon and Thursday 7pm inside Jade Martial Arts (2710 28th Street Boulder) and our super summer park series Tuesday 8:30am (Maple Grove Park Golden - sign up by checking "holy yoga" at https://redrockssports.com/leagues/).
Springtime in the Rockies is so thrilling: yesterday it was snowing and today, the grass is greener and the sky is bursting in blue. The winter chill has been replaced by a glorious morning: His compassion's are new every morning.
I was reminded this week of how God's strength can do the same in our lives. I had one of those crushing blows that took me to my knees and to my bed where I didn't want to come out...until spring. My tear stained pillow is evidence of my broken heart and disappointment. As much as I wanted to wallow in my pathetic dirt-kicking-state (why do we chose that for ourselves sometimes?) a verse kept coming to mind. That "in this world you will have trouble, but take heart, I've overcome the world." I argued back by telling God that there's none of my heart left to even take!
Feelings are real and sometimes sitting with the hard stuff is what helps us realize where our strength really lies.
I managed to peel myself out of bed, take a shower and get into God's word. It was there I found the strength to face another day. Just the like my local landscape, after the cold of the storm, I had found refreshment from God.
It's our practice on the mat and the community of loving believers around that deepens our understanding of gaining strength. Being a Christian can be hard work and being strong in our yoga help us face even the toughest of life's situations.
See you on your mat, without your covers, this week: Moday 8am, Wednesday noon and Thursday 7pm. 2710 28th Street, Boulder. (inside Jade Martial Arts)
